On my previous module, I had the opportunity in writing my own short story script. This script could be anything that we would like. Before we started writing we needed to think of a main story. What would this story be about? Who are the characters? How are they going to develop? My story is centred around a young adult who after a traumatic experience is finding it hard to live without the love of her life.

From this experience, I got to learn how to format a script and how they should be presented. Looking into all the steps it takes to create a story and turn it into a script was not only advised but also excellent practise. I took interest in Blake Sniders “Save the Cat” script writing book which, led me to delve deep into my background story. I wrote short paragraphs of what would happen either before or after my short script takes place.

To write my script I used the celtx software which allows you to have a perfectly formatted script, placing and arranging your characters, dialogue, parenthetical, etc all in the correct space and width of each other. The difficulty I found was ensuring that it all made sense. The idea of a story is to ask a question to the audience at the beginning, mine was “why is she acting this way”, and throughout the question would slowly be answered. However, I did something rather unconventional, asking another question at the end of my script, “will she survive”. This was not only seen to be obscene but also rarely used. Many found this intriguing, making them want to read more; others didn’t understand the point of the second question.

To develop my skills next time, I believe I will ensure that my formatting is polished as well as my character development. Within my story, looking back there was very minor or unnoticeable character development. But also, little mention of back story which within the specific short story, wasn’t felt to be necessary. Overall, I learnt that I have passion for writing, script writing. Being able to write a story and embed a deeper meaning behind it, makes for a powerful and emotional read.
